Justice Ekow Baiden, a judge at the Court of Appeal, is currently facing charges of defrauding by false pretense. The case involves a complaint made by Bire Marie-Dominique, a Senegalese individual residing in France. In her pursuit of business opportunities in Ghana, Marie-Dominique sought accommodation and came across Habitat Real Estates, an Estate company offering apartments for sale. She interacted with Ahmed Meyaki, who claimed to be the Managing Director of the company. Meyaki introduced her to Abdul Gafaru, a lawyer, and Jar Gardziella from Finland, who was said to be working with the company.
Marie-Dominique made a payment of US$190,000 into a Standard Chartered Bank account with the account name Charles Edward Ekow Baiden, described as a High Court ‘8’ Judge and the apparent owner of the apartment. In May 2021, she expected to take possession of the apartment, but Justice Ekow Baiden failed to sign any agreement. Instead, he claimed the property would cost US$250,000. Feeling overcharged, Marie-Dominique demanded a refund, which he didn’t provide.
In light of her efforts to retrieve her money, Marie-Dominique alleges that she faced death threats and a defamation suit, leading her to flee Ghana. She is currently sick and afraid to return to Ghana due to safety concerns.
The situation has drawn attention from Mensah Thompson, the Executive Secretary of ASEPA Ghana, who expressed concern about a judge’s actions in this case involving a foreign individual. The police are actively pursuing the suspects in this matter.
