The US State Department has released its 2022 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices in Ghana, which revealed serious human rights issues in the country. According to the executive summary of the report, violence against the LGBTQI community in Ghana and the passing of legislation to criminalize LGBTQI activities were highlighted as major human rights concerns.
The report also cited other human rights violations in Ghana, including unlawful killings, severe restrictions on free expression and media, unwarranted arrests and prosecutions of journalists, and limitations on freedom of assembly. The summary further stated that the Ghanaian government is taking measures to address issues of corruption and human rights abuses by officials, but impunity continues to be a problem.
In addition, the report highlighted significant human rights issues such as arbitrary or unlawful killings, torture or cruel treatment by the government or on its behalf, arbitrary arrest or detention, and substantial interference with the freedom of peaceful assembly. Other concerns included government corruption, lack of accountability for gender-based violence, crimes targeting LGBTQI and disabled persons, and laws criminalizing consensual same-sex sexual conduct between adults, albeit not fully enforced.
Overall, the report revealed the presence of significant human rights violations in Ghana in 2022, which require urgent attention and redress by the government and other stakeholders.
