235 Schools Face Withheld Results in 2023 WASSCE Due to Use of AI-Generated Answers

WAEC Withholds 2023 WASSCE Results for 235 Schools Due to AI-Assisted Answers

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the withholding of subject results for candidates from 235 schools who participated in the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). This decision is attributed to the detection of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) usage in generating responses, as outlined in a press release issued on December 18.

WAEC noted instances where students employed A.I. to answer examination questions, specifying, “Some subject results of candidates from 235 schools have been withheld for collusion and the use of artificial intelligence generated answers. These cases are still under investigation.” The outcomes of these investigations will determine whether the results will be released or canceled.

The press release underscores WAEC’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the examination process. Additionally, it revealed that 3,647 subject results are at risk of cancellation due to candidates bringing foreign materials into examination centers. Furthermore, 839 candidates had their entire results nullified for possessing mobile phones in the examination hall.

In a broader context, WAEC disclosed that the results of 4,280 candidates’ subjects and the entire results of 1,005 individuals have been withheld for various suspected offenses, reflecting stringent measures in place to maintain the credibility of the WASSCE.
