Access Bank has announced the tragic passing of its Group CEO, Herbert Wigwe, who, along with his wife, son, and two others, lost their lives in a helicopter crash in California on Saturday. The bank hailed Wigwe as a visionary leader whose dedication transformed Access into a global powerhouse, pledging to uphold his legacy of excellence and compassion. Wigwe, whose professional journey began at Coopers & Lybrand and included over a decade at Guaranty Trust Bank, co-purchased Access Bank in 2002 with his business partner, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede. Under their leadership, the bank’s stature grew significantly, ascending from the 65th largest in Nigeria to the 4th largest over a span of 15 years, from 2002 to 2017.
