Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the 16th Asantehene, recently celebrated his 73rd birthday at a lavish party in London, UK. The event was attended by former Ghanaian President John Agyekum Kufuor and current President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who praised the Asantehene for his efforts in promoting peace and stability in Ghana. The party was held at an upscale venue where Otumfuo had been staying while attending the coronation of King Charles II.
Videos of the celebration showed Otumfuo and his wife, Lady Julia, dancing to music surrounded by guests on the dance floor. Otumfuo and Lady Julia had arrived in the UK the week prior and met with King Charles in a private meeting before joining the coronation events on May 6. President Akufo-Addo and First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo also attended the coronation in their official capacity.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s stool name is in direct succession to the founder of the Ashanti Empire, Otumfuo Osei Tutu I, who lived in the 17th century. He is currently the Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and is one of the most respected traditional authorities in Ghana.
