“Akufo-Addo Throws Shade at Mahama: “It’s a Good Thing You’re Not God””

During the commissioning ceremony of the Elmina Fishing Harbour on May 26, 2023, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo took the opportunity to address the crowd and indirectly criticize former President John Dramani Mahama. The President’s remarks focused on the successful completion of the Elmina Fishing Port and countered Mahama’s previous skeptical comments.

Expressing his gratitude to the people for their trust in his government to deliver the project, President Akufo-Addo recalled the groundbreaking ceremony that took place on August 20, 2020. He commended the residents of Elmina for disregarding the negative voices and specifically referenced Mahama’s visit to the town four months later. During his visit, Mahama dismissed the project as a “sakawa fishing harbour” and claimed it would never come to fruition.

“I extend my thanks to the people of Elmina for entrusting the Akufo-Addo government with the responsibility to complete this project, the sod of which I cut on August 20, 2020. I appreciate their resilience in disregarding the naysayers. I vividly recall that, after the groundbreaking ceremony, the former President, John Dramani Mahama, the perennial NDC presidential candidate, visited Elmina in December and labeled the fishing harbour as ‘a sakawa fishing harbour.’ He was resolute in his belief that the construction of the Elmina Harbour would never materialize,” the President stated.

With a hint of satisfaction, President Akufo-Addo reminded the audience that Mahama is not infallible and expressed his joy that both Mahama and the skeptics are alive to witness the commissioning of the Elmina Fishing Port.

“It is fortunate that he is not God, and I am equally pleased that he, along with all those who doubted, are here today to witness President Akufo-Addo inaugurating the Elmina Fishing Port,” he emphasized.

The President acknowledged the significance of the Elmina Fishing Port, which now joins the existing fishing ports in Tema and Sekondi-Takoradi. He also mentioned the ongoing works on the Jamestown Fishing Port, which, upon completion, will bring the total number of fishing ports in the country to four. President Akufo-Addo assured the audience that his government remains committed to supporting the growth of the fishing industry by implementing programs and initiatives that foster its development.
