President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has pledged the government’s unwavering commitment to providing essential assistance to the victims of flooding in the Eastern, Greater Accra, and Volta regions. This flooding is a result of the controlled release of excess water from the Kpong and Akosombo Dams.
During his visit to the affected residents in Mepe and surrounding areas, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of immediate relief and the prevention of future disasters. He mentioned the formation of an inter-ministerial committee tasked with deciding on relief measures for victims and ensuring that such catastrophic events are averted.
The President highlighted that the primary focus was saving lives, which led to the establishment of 9 relief centers to aid displaced individuals. NADMO has been actively providing relief items, and there are plans to continue this support. Additionally, he acknowledged the impact on local farmers and revealed collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Finance, and the Office of the President, working alongside district assemblies to determine the necessary assistance for affected farmers once the water recedes.
President Akufo-Addo emphasized that the committee is working in phases, with immediate relief and future disaster prevention being top priorities. He assured the public that the government is fully dedicated to ensuring the well-being of all citizens and that political considerations should not interfere with disaster response efforts.
The controlled water release from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams, initiated by the VRA on September 15, 2023, was a response to the rising inflow pattern and water levels in the Akosombo reservoir. This release has led to the submersion of homes for thousands of residents in areas such as South Tongu, North Tongu, Central Tongu, Asuogyaman, and several other regions.
