Ama Governor denied Call to the Bar for the second time

Social media influencer and aspiring lawyer, Elorm Aba Ababio, also known as Ama Governor, has faced a second denial for her Call to the Bar by the General Legal Council. This rejection precedes the upcoming Call to the Bar ceremony scheduled for Saturday, October 20, 2023.

In a letter dated October 18, 2023, signed by Justice Cyra Pamela C. A. Koranteng (JA), the Judicial Secretary, the decision was attributed to the Council’s examination of Ms. Elorm Ababio’s behavior leading up to her application. An earlier letter dated March 13, 2023, from the General Legal Council had conveyed their intention to assess her conduct during this period.

Following a meeting on October 17, 2023, the General Legal Council decided to decline Ms. Elorm Ababio’s application due to certain conduct elements observed in her public behavior prior to her application submission.

The Council reached two conclusions: Ms. Elorm Ababio is allowed to complete the necessary forms for application to be Called to the Bar at any time after the event on October 20, 2023. In the interim, the General Legal Council will continue to monitor her conduct.

Background

In 2022, despite fulfilling all requirements, Ama Governor was denied the Call to the Bar, citing her engagement in “conduct unbecoming of an applicant to be called to the Bar.” This decision triggered public debate, with some questioning the basis for the denial and others supporting the General Legal Council’s actions.

Ama Governor maintained that she had not engaged in any offensive behavior or inappropriate communications and felt treated unfairly. However, in September 2023, a report by the General Legal Council at the 2022/2023 bar conference indicated that a committee had considered the complaint, and she was allowed to commence her application for the October/November 2023 sessions.

Below is a transcript of the letter
