Ashanti Kingdom’s Overlord, Nana Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Orders Destoolment of Chief of Antoa
On Monday, May 29, 2023, His Royal Majesty Nana Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom, issued a decree for the destoolment of the chief of Antoa, Nana Owusu Agyeman I. The decision was made following a judicial hearing held at the Manhyia Palace.
According to sources from Manhyia, the chief of Antoa, also known as Antoahene, had violated customary procedures by appointing his nephew as his successor while he was still alive. In addition, he was accused of disrespecting and denigrating the authority of the Asantehene.
During the judicial council proceedings, the Family Head of the Antoahene’s family testified, recounting the events that led to the chief’s destoolment. The Antoahene had explained to his chiefs who opposed his decision that he did not require the approval of the Asantehene, as he occupied his stool before the Otumfuo became the King of Ashanti.
The Family Head advised against the appointment of the chief’s nephew, citing the need to seek the approval and blessings of the Asantehene, as it was the King’s prerogative to delegate such powers. However, the 96-year-old Antoahene responded disrespectfully, asserting his authority and dismissing the importance of seeking the Asantehene’s agreement.
Another witness, the Chief Linguist to the Antoahene, reminded him that his authority as chief was bestowed upon him by the Otumfuo. In response, the Antoahene claimed that he was in power before the Asantehene’s ascension and that his chief served and swore allegiance to him alone.
These actions and proclamations by the Antoahene were not only a breach of customary rites but also appeared to undermine the authority and power of the Asantehene. As a result, the destoolment was carried out in accordance with Ashanti traditions and the importance of upholding the authority of the King.
