Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has been invited as a special guest to the University of Oxford to honour former Ghanaian President John Agyekum Kufuor, who is an alumnus of the university. The invitation was disclosed by a social media page called Ashanti Kingdom, which shares content about the revered monarch and Asanteman.
Former President Kufuor is currently in the United Kingdom, having been captured at the 73rd birthday dinner of the Asantehene in London. The Asantehene, on the other hand, arrived in the UK last week as an official guest for the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla on May 6.
According to Ashanti Kingdom’s tweet, “Otumfuo has been invited to the University of Oxford today as a Special Guest at an event. The University is honouring its distinguished Alumni, former President John Agyekum Kufuor.”
It is not yet known why Kufuor is in the UK, but if he is being honoured by the Exeter College at Oxford, where he enrolled between 1961 and 1964, it would be his third honour. In 2002, the governing body of Exeter College bestowed on President J.A. Kufuor an Honorary Fellowship of the College. In 2019, a scholarship programme for postgraduates was also started in his name, the John Kufuor Scholarship.
