During the 113th Monetary Policy Committee on Monday, July 24, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, expressed concern over the practice of individuals keeping large volumes of foreign currencies in their homes. When asked about the report regarding the former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Madam Cecilia Dapaah, allegedly keeping over One million dollars in her bedroom, Dr. Addison acknowledged the concern but mentioned that the matter is currently in court, limiting further comments.
In the meantime, the Office of the Special Prosecutor has confirmed the arrest of Madam Cecilia Dapaah on suspicion of corruption and corruption-related offenses. The arrest occurred on 24th July 2023, at 11:55 GMT, following her resignation from the position of Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources on 22nd July 2023. The allegations involve large sums of money and valuable items reportedly stolen from her residence, leading to multiple reports urging an immediate investigation by the Special Prosecutor.
The incident, where Madam Cecilia Dapaah’s house helps allegedly stole substantial amounts of foreign and local currencies from her residence in Accra, has shocked the nation. Two house helps, Patience Botwe (18 years old) and Sarah Agyei (30 years old), are currently facing charges before an Accra Circuit Court in connection with the theft. The alleged stolen sum includes $1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghanaian cedis during the period between July and October 2022.
