The celebration of Akwasidae has traditionally been a vibrant cultural event in the Ashanti Kingdom. However, over time, it has taken on broader significance, encompassing political, diplomatic, and entertainment aspects. During the festivities, the Asantehene receives homage from both his subjects and visitors from around the world. The attendance of current and former presidents has often been a major highlight of the packed event.
On March 20, the celebration of Akwasidae was attended by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who represented President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Accompanying him was his wife, Samira Bawumia. Videos circulating on social media depict Bawumia and a group of around 80 Members of Parliament arriving at the event on a bus, where they were greeted by a crowd of enthusiastic party supporters. Most of the supporters were waving the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag and wearing T-shirts emblazoned with the Vice President’s portrait. Bawumia acknowledged the cheering crowd by waving back, accompanied by the Second Lady.
Subsequently, the Vice President and his entourage joined dignitaries in paying homage to the Asantehene and his sub-chiefs. The event was an excellent opportunity for political figures to network and engage with a broader spectrum of people, beyond their usual political support base
