Paramount Chief of Somey Traditional Area Gives New Ultimatum to Archbishop Agyinasare Over Controversial Remarks
Torgbi Adamah III, the Paramount Chief of the Somey Traditional Area, which encompasses Nogokpo, has announced the issuance of a new ultimatum by the traditional council to Archbishop Charles Agyinasare regarding his controversial remarks about Nogokpo several months ago.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Torgbi Adamah stated that the one-week ultimatum seeks an apology and the withdrawal of the said comment made by the clergyman. The announcement came after a meeting between the National Peace Council, Somey Traditional Council, and other relevant parties, where they agreed to pursue an amicable resolution.
“We have conveyed our position to the Peace Council and tasked them with communicating it to the Archbishop. The Somey Traditional Council grants the Archbishop a one-week ultimatum to retract the controversial comment and offer an unreserved apology to the people of Nogokpo, the Somey Traditional Area, and the entire Volta region,” Torgbi Adamah stated.
Emphasizing the seriousness of the matter, Torgbi Adamah highlighted that the Traditional Council had engaged its legal representatives to formally inform the Archbishop about the council’s decision and stance. The new ultimatum would commence upon the Archbishop’s receipt of the official communication.
Torgbi Adamah made it clear that if the Archbishop fails to comply with the traditional council’s demand for an apology, “the Somey Traditional Council will take appropriate action as deemed necessary.”
The Paramount Chief pointed out that there has long been a negative perception about the people of the Volta region. He expressed his disappointment, stating, “This issue should not have arisen. However, considering the persistent negative perception of our region’s people, which affects our intertribal marriages and job opportunities, the Archbishop should never have made those comments.”
Torgbi Adamah further remarked that as a respected and experienced man of God, the Archbishop’s role should be uniting people instead of making divisive statements. He called on the Archbishop to apologize and bring an end to this matter, emphasizing their dissatisfaction with the situation.
An earlier 15-day ultimatum had expired, with Agyinasare refusing to publicly apologize as requested by the Council. Instead, he responded by cautioning against attacking a child of God.
