Former Asante Kotoko coach, Opeele Boateng, has expressed his belief that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) must select Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as their flagbearer for the 2024 presidential elections. In a tweet on April 24, 2023, he stated that if Bawumia is not chosen to offer his expertise in digitalization as President, then the NPP should be prepared to lose power and return to opposition.
Bawumia is a leading candidate in the upcoming NPP flagbearership race, although he has not officially announced his candidacy. His aides have confirmed that he intends to run for the position. Other contenders for the position include former ministers Alan Kyerematen, Afriyie Osei Akoto, Joe Ghartey, and Boakye Agyarko. Additional candidates are Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, Kwabena Agyepong, and Francis Addai-Nimoh. The primaries are scheduled to take place later this year
