Confirmation: WAEC Receives GH¢55m for 2023 BECE and WASSCE

Government Grants GH¢55 Million to WAEC for 2023 BECE and WASSCE

The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) has received GH¢55 million from the government to organize this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The confirmation of the funds was made by WAEC’s Public Relations Officer, Winifred Ampiaw, on Thursday, July 27, 2023.

Ampiaw explained that GH¢10.5 million was allocated for the BECE, while GH¢40 million was designated for the WASSCE. This amount will cover the expenses related to the pre-exam activities and the conduct of the exams themselves. She assured the public that with the funds received, WAEC is fully capable of conducting both exams for this year.

The provision of the funds comes amid claims by the Minority that the 2023 WASSCE and BECE might be in jeopardy due to the government’s alleged failure to fulfill its financial commitments to WAEC. The Minority Spokesperson on Education, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, expressed concern over WAEC’s financial challenges, highlighting the need for over GH¢50 million to ensure the smooth organization of the exams.

In response to these concerns, Deputy Education Minister, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, assured that all arrangements for the BECE starting on August 7 are in place, and there will be no disruption. He mentioned that an amount of GH¢40 million has already been paid to WAEC to support their operations. The government is working to settle the remaining amount to ensure the successful completion of the examinations.
