It is notable that Commissioner of Police Nathan Kofi Boakye retired from active service on his 60th birthday, April 5, 2023, and combined his pull-out service with his birthday celebration. The event was well attended by top brass of the police and other notable figures in society, including IGP George Akuffo Dampare, businessman Ibrahim Mahama, former Black Stars and Bayern Munich defender Samuel Osei Kuffuor, and gospel singer Diana Asamoah.
During his 30-year career in the Ghana Police Service, COP Nathan Kofi Boakye singled out four individuals for particular praise. These included two businessmen, his best friend, and another benefactor who took him in during his National Service days. He also acknowledged the contributions of retired Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Akwasi Misa, who provided him with a place to stay when he had nowhere to go.
COP Nathan Kofi Boakye is widely known as Commander One and is recognized for his significant contributions to crime-fighting in Ghana. He gained national recognition in 2005 when he led the officers from the Accra Region Command in the arrest of notorious armed robber Ataa Ayi and his gang. During his tenure as police chief in the Ashanti Region, he implemented a dynamic approach to apprehending criminals that struck fear in the hearts of many robbers. He was also known for his strong opinions and controversial arrests of public figures, including musicians Kwaw Kese and Shatta Wale
