Disregard purported increase in transport fares – Transport Ministry

The Ministry of Transport has refuted claims of an increase in transport fares by the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana and the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU). In a statement released on January 17, the Ministry clarified that no negotiations had taken place for fare adjustments and urged the public to disregard the reported increase. The Commercial Transport Operators attributed the proposed fare hike to rising costs of lubricants, spare parts, and DVLA service charges impacting their members’ livelihoods. They emphasized the need for a fare adjustment to address financial challenges and sustain the public transportation industry. The GPRTU also announced a 20% fare increase, effective January 24, 2024, citing the decision from a national management meeting held on January 16, 2024.
