Asante Kotoko Reappoints Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum as Head Coach Almost One Year After Resignation
Following disagreements with the club’s management, Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum had abruptly resigned from his position as head coach of Asante Kotoko about a year ago. However, the club has now reappointed Ogum to the same role.
Recently, Ogum was spotted at Kotoko’s Adako Jachie facility, engaging in constructive conversations with Kwesi Appiah, a former Kotoko captain and coach for Ghana. The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has tasked Appiah with leading the club in the absence of a board and administration, including the responsibility of finding a suitable coach and managing the recruitment process.
This decision was made by Otumfuo on Friday, and Appiah has acted swiftly, hinting that he may have already chosen Ogum as the ideal person for the head coach position.
Speculation about Ogum’s return to the club had been rife even before the meeting, and the encounter between Ogum and Kwesi Appiah at Adako Jachie further indicates the likelihood of his return.
Previously, Ogum had served as a coach for West Africa Football Club (WAFA) before taking up the role as head coach at Asante Kotoko just before the start of the 2021/22 season. During his tenure, he successfully ended the team’s eight-year trophy drought by leading them to victory in the Ghana Premier League.
Following his departure, Burkinabe trainer Seydou Zerbo was brought in, but he was later dismissed during the season due to the team’s poor performance in various competitions, including early exits from the CAF Champions League and the FA Cup.
In the interim, Abdul Gazale took over as head coach, leading the team to a fourth-place finish behind Medeama SC, Aduana Stars, and Bechem United.
In the coming days, as the new season approaches, the club is expected to announce its new board of directors and management staff.
