The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Nigeria has achieved significant breakthroughs, with arrests and seizures totaling approximately N13 billion (GH₵197,432,943.37) in street value.
According to a recent police statement, three visually impaired individuals were among those apprehended in connection with alleged drug trafficking. Vanguard online reported that these operations unfolded at various locations in Lagos, underscoring the widespread nature of the drug trade in the region. Seized drugs include 14,481,519 pills of Tramadol and bottles of codeine syrup.
Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA Director for Media and Advocacy, provided details of the operations, spanning three major busts targeting drug cartels in Amuwo Odofin, Idumota, and the SAHCO shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos.
One operation in Amuwo Odofin yielded a significant quantity of seized drugs. Another revealed a secret Surulere warehouse operated by wealthy Idumota trader Nwaoha Anayo, containing a substantial amount of Tramadol. Additionally, a syndicate facilitating illicit drug smuggling through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport was exposed, leading to the arrest of six members.
A visually impaired man, Adamu Hassan, was apprehended in Abuja with 12 kilograms of skunk, and further investigations led to the arrest of the syndicate’s leader, Bello Abubakar. Two other visually impaired individuals, Muktar Abubakar and Akilu Amadu, were also arrested for their roles in the illicit trade, while another individual, Mallam Aminu, remains at large.
Operatives in Osun uncovered a large cannabis farm in Owena-Ijesa, seizing a substantial amount of processed cannabis. In Edo, a trans-loading point in Avbiosi forest was raided, resulting in the seizure of 603 kilograms of illicit substances. Additional drug seizures occurred in Ogun, Lagos, and Oyo states.
These operations reflect the ongoing efforts of the NDLEA to combat drug abuse and trafficking throughout Nigeria.
