Emissions Levy takes effect today

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has implemented the Emissions Levy Act, 2023 (Act 1112) today, imposing charges on carbon dioxide equivalent emissions from internal combustion engine vehicles. Aligned with government efforts to combat greenhouse gas emissions, the levy varies by vehicle type and engine capacity. Motorcycles and tricycles face an annual fee of GH₵75, while motor vehicles, buses, and coaches up to 3000 cubic centimeters are charged GH₵150 per annum. Vehicles exceeding 3000 cubic centimeters, cargo trucks, and articulated trucks are required to pay GH₵300 annually. The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) plans to release updated transport fares in response to the emissions levy, emphasizing the need for fair considerations in the pricing adjustments. Abbas Imoro, GPRTU’s Public Relations Officer, highlights their intention to calculate and communicate fare adjustments to passengers.
