Ashanti Kingdom’s Overlord Orders Destoolment of Chief of Antoa After Defiance
In a significant development, His Royal Majesty Nana Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the revered leader of the Ashanti Kingdom, issued a decree on Monday, May 29, 2023, for the destoolment of Nana Owusu Agyeman I, the Chief of Antoa. This decision came after a tribunal of the Asanteman Traditional Council, led by Otumfuo, found Nana Agyeman guilty of defying the authority of the King.
In an exclusive audio shared by Royal Palace Multimedia on YouTube, several elders of the Antoa Traditional Council testified before the tribunal, shedding light on Nana Agyeman’s actions. According to the witnesses, Nana Agyeman swore in his nephew as a delegated chief of the town despite opposition from his kinsmen and without seeking approval from Otumfuo, as mandated by tradition.
The witnesses recounted that Nana Agyeman claimed the authority to delegate his powers to his nephew without the authorization of Otumfuo, stating, “Let them tell me what transpired and let no one dare lie to me. I sit here, but I am very informed about everything that has happened at Antoa,” as ordered by Otumfuo.
During the tribunal, one elder testified about his encounter with Nana Agyeman regarding the intended delegation of powers. The elder expressed his disagreement, highlighting that the authority to delegate lies solely with the Asantehene (the King). Despite the elder’s counsel, Nana Agyeman proceeded with the installation, disregarding the strong opposition from other kinsmen.
Corroborating the testimonies, another elder recalled how a queen mother had invoked a sacred oath against the event, attempting to halt the installation. However, Nana Agyeman persisted, even against the advice of his wife and amidst opposition from the community.
After carefully considering the various testimonies, Otumfuo ordered the destoolment of Nana Agyeman as Antoahene. The King declared, “Antoahene, you claim you want to delegate your power because you are tired. Today, you will leave my stool for me… I will delegate emissaries and police officers to escort you. All the necessary rites will be performed for his removal.”
Nana Kwame Owusu Agyeman served as the Chief of Antoa for over two decades. Following Otumfuo’s ruling, official rites for his destoolment were set into motion in the town of Antoa.
