From the Eastern Region: Another armed robbery occurrence has been documented in Somanya, marking the second incident within a span of 12 days. On the evening of Monday, October 23, 2023, between 6:30 and 7:00 pm, a group of four robbers, which included a female, executed a bold robbery at the Gaso Filling station and a mobile money vendor in Ogome, a suburb of Somanya.
This incident follows a similar occurrence on October 11, 2023, in which eight robbers, including a female, targeted the SP Gas filling station situated less than 200 meters from the Goaso filling station. It is suspected that the four robbers are linked to the same gang responsible for the earlier robbery at the SP Gas station.
The armed robbers were armed with pump-action guns, with the female member of the gang solely responsible for firing shots into the air. They looted an undisclosed sum of money from the fuel station, and a nearby mobile money operator reportedly lost over GHC 28,000 to the criminals.
During the robbery, an attendant of the filling station and two other witnesses were shot. Two of the victims have been admitted to the Yilo Krobo Municipal Hospital, while one received treatment and was discharged at the Somanya polyclinic. After the robbery, the assailants fled into nearby bushes before the arrival of the Somanya Police.
Despite police efforts to pursue the robbers, the chase proved unsuccessful. In response to the earlier incident, the police had issued directives to major businesses, urging them to close their establishments by 8 pm to prevent similar incidents. Regrettably, this directive is not being adhered to by the business operators. Police authorities have also initiated investigations into the most recent armed robbery.
