Ghana’s Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has taken legal action against Captain Smart, the host of Onua TV’s Morning Show, for defamation. Ofori-Atta alleges that Captain Smart made false claims on his show, stating that the Finance Minister had taken a 10% share of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) $3 billion bailout for Ghana. The Minister’s lawyers argue that these allegations wrongly depict Ofori-Atta as corrupt.
In his lawsuit, Ofori-Atta is seeking Ten Million Ghana Cedis (GH¢10,000,000.00) in damages, including aggravated and/or exemplary damages for defamation caused by Captain Smart’s statements. Additionally, the Finance Minister is requesting a permanent injunction to prevent Captain Smart, his servants, agents, or associates from making similar defamatory remarks about him in the future. Ofori-Atta also expects an apology and a retraction of the statement from Captain Smart.
In separate news, Ghana’s request for a $3 billion bailout over three years to support the country’s recovery from its debt crisis has been approved. The approval has led to the immediate release of $600 million, marking the initial phase of the transaction between Ghana and the IMF.
