“Former MP Joseph Albert Qualm Sues Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng for Defamation”
Joseph Albert Qualm, a former Member of Parliament for Manso Nkwanta, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the former Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM). Qualm is seeking GH¢2.5 million in damages and a restraining order to prevent Prof. Frimpong-Boateng from making further comments about a leaked galamsey report that he authored.
In the report, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng alleged that Qualm, who also served as a board member on the Minerals Commission, used his position to acquire multiple mining concessions and subsequently sold them to private individuals, including party members, for two hundred thousand Cedis per concession. These claims were said to have caused dissatisfaction within the party in the constituency, leading to Qualm’s defeat in the 2020 primaries.
Qualm has strongly refuted these allegations, considering them defamatory. He is seeking a court declaration stating that the statements made by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng in his report are defamatory towards him. Additionally, Qualm is requesting an injunction to prevent further publication or repetition of the defamatory words in the report through media interviews or any other means.
The lawsuit highlights the legal battle between the former MP and the ex-chairman of the IMCIM, with Qualm seeking redress for the alleged harm caused by the statements made against him. The outcome of this case will determine the resolution of the defamation claims and any potential consequences for both parties involved.
