Gertrude Torkornoo to be appointed by Akufo-Addo as the new Chief Justice of Ghana.

It has been reported that Supreme Court Judge Justice Gertrude Torkornoo is being considered as the next Chief Justice of Ghana by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Justice Torkornoo would take over from Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah, who is set to retire on May 24, 2023, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70 years for justices of the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

The Council of State of Ghana has reportedly approved the appointment of Justice Torkornoo as the new head of Ghana’s judiciary. President Akufo-Addo is expected to submit her appointment to the Parliament of Ghana for approval under Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution.

If appointed, Justice Torkornoo will become the third Chief Justice to be appointed during Akufo-Addo’s presidency since 2017. She will also be the third woman to hold the position, following in the footsteps of Justices Georgina Theodora Wood and Sophia Akuffo.
