Ghana and China are on the verge of signing a cooperation agreement aimed at exploring investment opportunities in various sectors within the Kumasi metropolis in the Ashanti region. Discussions for this collaboration are well advanced and encompass endeavors such as commercial rice farming, the construction of a railway connecting two seaports to the Boankra Inland port, and the construction of an International Conference Centre in Kumasi.
Simon Osei-Mensah, the Ashanti Regional Minister, disclosed this during an exclusive interview with the Ghana News Agency while attending the third Belt and Road Forum for international cooperation in Beijing, China. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), initiated by China’s President Xi Jinping, aims to establish a community with shared goals and prosperity among nations.
The Regional Minister highlighted the enthusiasm of Chinese investors in supporting these vital infrastructure projects in the Kumasi metropolis. He further mentioned that a Ghanaian delegation, in collaboration with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, would be visiting Qufu Normal University in China under the Confucius Centre to learn from best practices.
Mr. Osei-Mensah emphasized the significance of collaboration for global peace and development, especially in the context of Ghana’s vision of building a shared future for mankind based on principles such as mutual trust, respect, equality, mutual benefit, and win-win cooperation.
Ghana and China have a longstanding history of cultural and economic exchanges dating back to the 15th century, with cooperation spanning various sectors, including infrastructure projects, agriculture, health, education, trade, and investment.
The Regional Minister commended the Chinese President’s efforts to support effective cooperation among partners of the BRI, emphasizing initiatives such as promoting international green development, advancing scientific and technological innovation, facilitating people-to-people exchanges, and implementing integrity measures to ensure the successful execution of infrastructure projects.
