In an official communication from the Ghana Education Service (GES), it has been confirmed that the West African Senior School Certificate Examination for School Candidates (WASSCE-SC) for the year 2024 will now be held from August 5 to September 27. This announcement comes as an update to the previously announced schedule of July 1 to August 31, 2024.
The circular signed by Prince C. Agyemang-Duah, the acting Director of Schools and Instructions Division of the GES, was distributed to regional directors, instructing them to relay the information to all heads of senior high schools (SHSs). The letter emphasized the need for schools to adjust their preparations accordingly, indicating that the new date supersedes the earlier one communicated to the schools.
While the reasons for the change in date were not officially stated, sources suggest that it aims to provide candidates with ample time to prepare for the examination. Upon contacting John Kapi, the Head of Public Affairs of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), it was confirmed that the WASSCE-SC would continue in the Ghana Only Version for the third consecutive time. This decision aligns with the adjustments made by other member countries of WAEC — Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia — who have reverted to the May/June calendar following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kapi clarified that despite the Ghana Only Version, the examination’s processes, conditions, and subjects remain consistent with those of other member countries. He assured that the results would be released on time, enabling students to proceed to tertiary institutions as planned. The registration portal for WASSCE-SC candidates opened on March 11 and will close on April 19, 2024.
In summary, while the WASSCE-SC for 2024 SHS candidates in Ghana has been rescheduled to August 5 to September 27, all relevant stakeholders are encouraged to prepare accordingly, as the examination processes and outcomes remain unchanged despite the shift in dates.
