Ghanaian Businessman Sentenced to Prison for Bigamy After Marrying US-Based Woman

According to an article from asaaseradio.com, a businessman named Emmanuel Kodjo Narh has been sentenced to a 12-month prison term by an Accra circuit court for committing bigamy. The court, presided over by Justice Christina Cann, found the accused guilty of bigamy after previously clearing him of charges related to threats to harm.

The report states that Emmanuel Kodjo Narh was legally married to his wife in Ghana while also having a valid marriage with a nurse residing in the United States. The complainant, whose identity has been withheld, is a nurse from Odumase Krobo in Ghana who currently lives in the USA.

The events leading to the case began in June 2015 when the complainant was informed by her property manager in Ghana that a road was being constructed near her property. The manager provided her with several phone numbers, including Narh’s, to address the issue. When she contacted Narh, he assured her that he would handle the problem.

Following their initial interaction, Narh and the complainant became friends, and he started calling her regularly to check up on her. In August 2015, Narh proposed to the complainant, but she declined, suggesting that they should first get to know each other in person. She planned to visit Ghana so they could discuss the proposal further.

The prosecution revealed that the complainant and Narh met in person for the first time on October 26, 2015, when she arrived in Ghana. Two days later, on October 28, 2015, Narh proposed to her with a ring, introduced her to his family, and showed her around his workplace.

During their interactions, Narh informed the complainant that he had children with two other women without being married to them. In turn, the complainant disclosed that she was divorced. While the complainant was still in the USA, Narh’s family performed marriage rites at her family’s house without her knowledge.

Upon the complainant’s return to Ghana, she discovered another marriage certificate dated October 4, 2008, between Narh and another woman. This revelation led to physical abuse from the other woman, prompting the complainant to seek an end to the marriage. The police were involved, resulting in the arrest of Narh’s first wife. Narh claimed that both women were his wives.

In June 2019, the complainant received a threatening message via WhatsApp from Narh, sent through his son’s phone. The message contained a tribal threat. The complainant reported the incident to the director general of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), leading to the involvement of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) at the Police Headquarters in Accra.

During the investigation, Narh admitted in his statement that the marriage between him and the complainant was a planned arrangement to facilitate documents for his daughter to travel to the USA.

Ultimately, the court found Emmanuel Kodjo Narh guilty of bigamy and sentenced him to a 12-month jail term.
