Angel Carbonu, the President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), has emphasized the need for the education system to adhere to Ghana’s Labor laws and grant teachers their entitled annual leave. He pointed out that although Ghana’s labor laws stipulate leave entitlement for teachers, they are not receiving this benefit.
Carbonu stressed that the vacation breaks, which students enjoy, should not be considered a substitute for teachers’ leave. He explained that even during these breaks, teachers remain engaged in marking students’ exam papers.
During a recent radio interview on November 3, 2023, with Accra-based Citi FM, Mr. Carbonu expressed deep concern about the well-being of teachers. He questioned whether anyone cared about the lives of teachers and highlighted the alarming toll of overwork and a lack of rest, which has led to many teachers falling ill or even losing their lives.
He also raised the issue of inadequate compensation for teachers, emphasizing that their current compensation is far from satisfactory. In light of these concerns, he cautioned that teachers cannot be expected to continue working without proper rest periods.
