Haruna Iddrisu Initiates ‘Operation Over 1.5 Million Votes’ to Support Mahama’s Election in Ashanti Region 2024

NDC Launches “Operation Over 1.5 Million Votes” in Asawase Constituency of Ashanti Region

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) opposition party has announced its ambitious plan to secure over 1.5 million votes in the Ashanti region as part of their “Operation Over 1.5 Million Votes” initiative. This declaration was made during the NDC’s Unity Walk held in the Asawase Constituency on Sunday, June 4th, 2023.

The event, organized by Member of Parliament Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, saw the presence of prominent party figures including former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, Alhassan Suhuyini, Mohammed Murtala Ibrahim, Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, Francis-Xavier Sosu, Nii Lantey, Abdul Salam Adams, Ashanti regional chairman Augustus Nana Kwasi, and other regional executives.

Thousands of enthusiastic NDC supporters from the Asawase Constituency joined the walk, which covered various locations such as Asawase Post Office street, Twumasi junction, Manhyia roundabout, Aboabo station, Asawase Pay All, and concluded with speeches at the Aboabo post office.

Addressing the party members, Tamale Central MP Murtala Mohammed expressed gratitude to the NDC delegates and members who campaigned and supported the re-election of Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak as the NDC parliamentary representative for the Asawase Constituency in the upcoming 2024 election. Mohammed highlighted Muntaka’s leadership qualities and the trust placed in him by the NDC majority in parliament.

Former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu called upon NDC supporters in the constituency to set aside their differences during the party’s internal primaries, emphasizing the need for unity under the new leadership to guide the constituency toward the 2024 election.

In the previous 2020 election, the NDC secured 652,962 votes, equivalent to 26.08% of the total, in the Ashanti region—a traditional stronghold of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). This significant vote share positioned the region as the second-leading contributor to the NDC’s overall votes nationwide.

Despite the NPP’s efforts to diminish the NDC’s popularity in their stronghold, Haruna Iddrisu disclosed the NDC’s aim to surpass 1.5 million votes in the Ashanti region, thereby challenging the NPP’s longstanding dominance.

Expressing his gratitude to NDC supporters in the Ashanti region, Iddrisu acknowledged their unwavering support and declared Asawase as the heart of the NDC in the region. He urged everyone to remain united and work tirelessly toward the election of former President John Dramani Mahama and Muntaka Mohammed in the upcoming polls. Iddrisu stated that achieving over 1.5 million votes in the Ashanti region would signify a decisive victory and a step towards restoring economic freedom for Ghanaians.

Muntaka Mohammed, the former Minority Chief Whip and MP for the Asawase constituency, thanked his fellow MPs for their support and assured party members of his commitment to collaborate with present and past party leaders in the constituency. He stressed the importance of unity, calling for forgiveness and collective efforts for the greater good of the NDC.

With their sights set on the 2024 election, the NDC’s “Operation Over 1.5 Million Votes” initiative aims to mobilize supporters, consolidate their stronghold, and challenge the ruling NPP’s influence in the Ashanti region.
