James Gyakye Quayson, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has officially announced his candidacy for the upcoming Assin North by-election scheduled for June 27. Quayson expressed his determination to continue serving the people of Assin North with dedication and the resources at his disposal for the benefit of his constituents.
Quayson’s parliamentary membership was revoked after the Supreme Court invalidated his 2020 election due to his alleged allegiance to Canada. However, in a recent statement on June 1, he called on constituents to vote for him in large numbers so he can return to Parliament and continue the work he began towards advancing the development agenda of Assin North.
The legal challenges originated when a group petitioned the Electoral Commission, claiming that Quayson owed allegiance to Canada. Subsequently, Michael Ankomah-Nimfah, a resident of Yamoransa, filed a petition at the Cape Coast High Court seeking to invalidate Quayson’s declaration as the MP for Assin North. The court upheld Ankomah-Nimfah’s petition, citing a breach of constitutional provisions due to Quayson’s dual citizenship.
Consequently, the Cape Coast High Court nullified the 2020 parliamentary election in the Assin North Constituency. On May 17, the Supreme Court upheld this decision and instructed Parliament to remove Quayson’s name from its records. As a result, the seat for Assin North was declared vacant by Parliament on May 30, leading to the scheduling of a by-election on June 27.
The NDC has nominated Quayson as their candidate for the by-election, and he urged constituents to vote for him in his declaration. Quayson reiterated his commitment to advancing the development agenda of Assin North, should he be elected to Parliament once again.
