During her three-day visit to Ghana, the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, expressed her condemnation of the atrocities committed during the slave trade that resulted in the dehumanization and death of countless Africans. After touring the dungeons of the Cape Coast Castle, Harris emphasized the importance of remembering and learning from the horrors of the slave trade.
Before visiting the castle, Harris and the Second Gentleman of the US, Douglas Emhoff, paid a courtesy call on the Oguaamanhen, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, at the Emintsimadze Palace. The picturesque scene of the palace, adorned with both Ghanaian and American flags, was partially blocked off to ensure security measures were in place.
During her address after the tour of the dungeons, Harris stressed the importance of recognizing the struggles of all people and fighting for justice and human rights for everyone. The Oguaamanhen also shared the history of Cape Coast and the atrocities committed there, urging the two countries to work together for a better future.
The visit by Harris is part of a larger effort by the US to strengthen partnerships with African countries, with a focus on economic development, climate change, and food security. Her trip to Ghana is followed by visits to Tanzania and Zambia, and follows a conference hosted by President Joe Biden with African leaders in Washington
