The Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, is reportedly preparing to cite investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas for contempt of court. This follows the dismissal of a GHC25 million defamation case filed by Anas against the lawmaker by the Accra High Court. The trial judge, Justice Eric Baah, threw out the case and awarded GHc50,000 cost against Anas. In his judgement, Justice Baah said that Anas’s case had no merit and questioned his style of journalism.
Tiger Eye PI, the investigative firm led by Anas, responded to the judgement by stating that the case had passed through the hands of three judges, with Justice Baah being the latest assigned to the case at the request of Kennedy Agyapong. The statement also accused Agyapong of showing disrespect to the court and Anas’s lawyer during the trial but said attempts to cite him for contempt had failed.
However, according to Lawyer Ralph Agyapong, who represents Kennedy Agyapong, Anas’s statement implies that the lawmaker chose the judge who sat on the case, and he is preparing to cite Anas for contempt of court. Lawyer Ralph Agyapong said he was drafting an application for contempt on the matter and hinted that in their next case, Anas would have to appear personally in court. He stressed that Anas, as the Director of Tiger Eye PI, had no other option but to appear in court personally because the Supreme Court had held that you cannot come to court and put on a face mask
