Kofi Amoabeng Criticizes JJ Rawlings’ Impact on Ghana

Kofi Amoabeng, Founder of UT Bank, Criticizes Jerry John Rawlings’ Impact on Ghana
In an interview on Kingdom FM, Capt. (rtd) Prince Kofi Amoabeng, the founder of the now-defunct UT Bank, shared his perspective that the late Jerry John Rawlings, Ghana’s first President of the 4th Republic, did not contribute significantly to the nation. He emphasized that Rawlings had a remarkable opportunity to transform Ghana but did not seize it. Amoabeng contended that Rawlings’ most notable achievement was guiding Ghana into the fourth republic, stating, “…when Papa Jay came, what did he do for Ghana? After all the people he killed, what did he do for Ghana? He didn’t do anything. What happened to us? But we had some stability, and he gave us the Fourth Republic.” He added, “But really, everybody discussing Ghana’s development believes Papa Jay had the best opportunity to turn this country around, but it didn’t happen.” These comments were made in response to the idea that New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong possesses traits similar to the late Jerry John Rawlings, which Amoabeng rejected. He further argued that Ghana does not require a ‘radical president’ for transformation, pointing out that significant change did not occur during Rawlings’ tenure.
