Marie-Claire Rupio, the wife of Christian Atsu, a Ghanaian footballer, has made an appeal to the governments of Turkey and the United Kingdom to send more personnel and equipment to assist in the rescue efforts following a devastating earthquake that took place in Turkey and Syria on February 6, 2023. In an interview with the BBC, Mrs. Rupio emphasized the urgency of the situation and the need for more resources to be deployed to save those still trapped in the rubble of the Renaissance Residence.
Mrs. Rupio stated, “I am pleading with the Hatayaspor club, the Turkish authorities, and the British government to send the necessary equipment to rescue those still trapped in the rubble, especially my husband and the father of my children. They cannot be rescued without the right equipment and time is running out.”
Christian Atsu and some of his club members from Hatayaspor were among those trapped in the earthquake. Although some survivors have been rescued, Atsu has not been found yet, despite earlier reports that he had been rescued and taken to the hospital.
As of Monday, 2023, CNN reported that the earthquake has resulted in the deaths of 34,000 people in both Turkey and Syria
