MCE reveals how wanted galamseyer forced closure of Axim schools due to missing mobile phone

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Nzema East Electoral Area, Dorcas Amoah, has shared an unsettling incident involving wanted ‘galamseyer’ Kwame Ato Asare Ani. Apparently, Ani ordered the closure of schools in the community due to his missing mobile phone, which caused chaos during a funeral. The situation was eventually brought under control with the intervention of the Educational Director, REGSEC, teachers, and community stakeholders.

Amoah recounted the incident during an interview with Peace FM’s Evening News on April 3, 2023. She explained that most of the settler farmers affected were Northerners and reported that Ani had demanded the return of his missing phone before allowing the children to attend school.

The MCE intervened in the case, and after discussions with the relevant stakeholders, the issue was resolved, and the children were allowed to attend school. Ani, who is currently on the police wanted list, has denied being an armed robber, stating that he has been working with the police as an informant in the Axim area.

The Ghana Police Service recently released a statement stating that they had arrested four men on March 28, including Ani, after the Axim Divisional Police Patrol Team reported an attack on them by a gang. A search at Ani’s residence led to the retrieval of weapons and other items.

The police became aware of a viral video showing a confrontation between some police officers and the arrested gang, in which the police were allegedly being extorted. The allegation of extortion has since been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for investigation.

It is a disturbing incident, and the police must take swift action to apprehend any criminal elements and ensure the safety and security of the community.
