National House of Chiefs Condemns LGBTQ+ Activities as an “Abomination” Contrary to Cultural Values

The National House of Chiefs has expressed their disapproval regarding the activities of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals in the country. They consider such activities unacceptable and inconsistent with Ghanaian cultural norms and values.

President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi, spoke on behalf of the chiefs and urged members of parliament to strongly resist any attempts to hinder the passage of the LGBTQ+ bill. During the Annual General Meeting, he emphasized that Ghanaian customs and traditions view LGBTQ+ activities as an abomination.

“Nananom, LGBTQ+ is evil. We, the Chiefs of Ghana, have received numerous calls from our people to make a public declaration regarding the LGBTQ+ threat. As custodians of culture, customs, and traditions, we categorically state that our traditions and customs recognize that our creator, known by various names in different religions as God or Allah, created man and woman to inhabit the earth and procreate,” he asserted.

President Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi emphasized that there are only two genders—male and female—and no other agenda. The Bible, Quran, and Ghanaian traditions and customs affirm these facts. Allowing anything contrary to these cherished values that have existed for centuries is considered an abomination and goes against Ghanaian cultural values.

The Chiefs firmly declared that they would not permit any group to promote LGBTQ+ activities in any form within Ghana. Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi called upon the police and other relevant institutions to prohibit the practice of LGBTQ+ in the country.

“We are not solely calling on the police; we are also calling on ourselves,” added Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi.

The Promotion of Proper Sexual Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021, is currently under consideration in Parliament. This contentious anti-LGBTQ+ bill, introduced as a private member’s bill to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, seeks to criminalize homosexuality and related acts, including promotion, advocacy, and funding.

However, the bill has faced legal challenges aiming to prevent its passage.
