The National Youth Authority (NYA) in Ghana is advocating for the removal of age restrictions for specific political offices outlined in the country’s Constitution. The NYA made this call during a courtesy visit to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, on August 1, 2023.
During the meeting, the NYA’s management took the opportunity to update the Speaker on various programs and activities planned to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Youth and Sports Authority.
Pius Enam Hadzide, CEO of the NYA, highlighted several significant initiatives, such as the “Mindset Change and National Reorientation Campaign” and the “Not Too Young to Run Campaign.” These programs aim to inspire and groom young individuals to assume leadership roles. However, age restrictions in certain political offices, including those of Assemblyman, Member of Parliament, and the Presidency, currently serve as barriers to youth development. It is this concern that motivated the NYA to push for their removal.
Speaker Bagbin warmly welcomed the NYA’s proposal and expressed confidence in the potential of the youth. He emphasized the importance of empowering young individuals to take up leadership positions, recognizing their capacity to contribute significantly to the nation’s progress. Additionally, the Speaker raised concerns about a declining sense of patriotism among the youth in the country.
In response to the NYA’s initiatives, Members of Parliament Francis-Xavier Sosu and Abla Dzifa Gomashie praised the organization for its efforts to promote youth empowerment and development.
The NYA’s proposal to eliminate age restrictions for specific political offices represents a crucial step in encouraging youth participation in governance and creating a more inclusive and dynamic political landscape in Ghana. By removing these barriers, the country can tap into the potential and fresh perspectives of its young population, fostering a brighter future for the nation.
