The NDC youth wing has declared a series of actions to pressure the government into retracting the 10% betting tax. This move follows their perception of an unjust tax policy that disproportionately affects the youth and the betting industry. The implementation of this tax, aimed at generating revenue, has faced backlash and worries.
The NDC youth contend that this tax unfairly impacts young Ghanaians who view betting as entertainment and, in some cases, a source of income. In a press release, George Opare Addo, the NDC’s National Youth Organiser, expressed the party’s dissatisfaction with the tax and vowed to voice their concerns through protests, advocacy, and civic engagement, urging the government to reverse its decision. Their plan involves picketing at the Ministry of Finance, occupying government offices nationwide, initiating both conventional and unconventional lawful protests, motivating young people to challenge government officials and demand an end to corruption, and occupying Parliament and other government institutions.
