NPP Holds Flagbearer Balloting Ahead of Special Delegates Conference
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) conducted balloting for its flagbearer hopefuls in preparation for the special delegates conference on August 26. The balloting took place in Accra on Wednesday, July 26, 2023. Kennedy Agyapong secured the first slot, while Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen obtained the second slot. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s agents picked the 10th position for their candidate.
The NPP aims to trim down the list of presidential aspirants from 10 to five, as per the party’s constitution, during the forthcoming special delegates conference. Before the balloting, nine aspirants, excluding Dr. Bawumia, petitioned the party leadership to hold the conference at one center instead of regionally, as they disagreed with the plan to limit voting to only 900 delegates at the regional level. However, the National Council of the NPP dismissed the petition after a critical meeting on July 20.
To guide the polls, the party issued directives, including holding the Special Electoral College at each of the 16 Regional Capitals and each delegate being entitled to one vote, cast by secret ballot for only one candidate. The Electoral Commission of Ghana will conduct the Special Electoral College elections, and an Elections Committee has been established to supervise the process.
The National Council expressed concern over divisive comments and utterances from some aspiring candidates and their supporters and emphasized compliance with the Code of Conduct for Presidential and Parliamentary Elections of the Party. Any violations of the Code of Conduct will be dealt with in accordance with the guidelines and the Party Constitution.
