The fate of Ghana’s finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, will be determined by the entire New Patriotic Party (NPP), according to Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Leader in parliament. This statement comes in response to the #KenMustGo movement led by several NPP MPs calling for the minister’s removal.
During a media engagement, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu explained that President Akufo-Addo had initially requested that Ofori-Atta be allowed to conclude negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). With the successful completion of these negotiations, the party will now need to collectively decide on the way forward.
“The #KenMustGo uprising should be left for the party’s caucus to handle. The entire caucus will engage in discussions to determine the next steps,” stated the MP. He also mentioned the possibility of meeting with the president if necessary, but emphasized the importance of sometimes allowing matters to rest.
However, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu highlighted that the conclusion of the IMF engagement, as requested by the president, should be taken into consideration. He pointed out that the matter would be addressed at an appropriate time, taking into account the party’s commitments with the IMF.
In 2022, more than 100 NPP MPs had petitioned the president to dismiss Ken Ofori-Atta due to concerns of mismanagement in Ghana’s economy. President Akufo-Addo, however, urged for Ofori-Atta to complete the ongoing IMF negotiations to secure a $3 billion bailout for the country.
Following the successful deal with the IMF, calls for the finance minister’s removal have resurfaced, prompting further deliberation within the NPP. The party’s decision regarding Ken Ofori-Atta’s future will be a significant development in the ongoing discussions surrounding his position.
