Presidential candidate, Akwasi Addae Odike, has attributed the current economic challenges facing Ghana to the mismanagement of the country’s finances during the administration of former President John Mahama. Odike, who is the Founder and Leader of the Unity Government Movement, accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of contributing significantly to the country’s economic downturn. He stated that Mahama’s administration recklessly borrowed money, resulting in Ghana’s debt ballooning from GH¢17 billion to GH¢122 billion.
Odike criticized Mahama’s decision to disburse loans to fund school projects across the country, arguing that loans are not meant for building schools because they do not provide any returns to the country. He claimed that this decision is the genesis of Ghana’s economic challenges. Odike questioned why Mahama is seeking to become president again, despite his previous experience as an Assemblyman, Member of Parliament, Deputy Minister, Minister, Vice President, and President.
In summary, Odike believes that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) cannot be solely blamed for Ghana’s economic challenges, and that the NDC, under Mahama’s leadership, also contributed significantly to the current state of the country’s economy
