The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has lifted the freezing order on five (5) bank accounts belonging to former Sanitation Minister Ms. Cecilia Dapaah. A statement from the OSP clarified that the freezing order remains in effect for her other bank accounts and financial assets. The Special Prosecutor initiated an investigation in July 2023 regarding suspected corruption and corruption-related offenses involving substantial amounts of money and valuable items associated with Ms. Cecilia Abena Dapaah.
The Special Prosecutor took various measures, including issuing a freezing order on Ms. Dapaah’s bank accounts and financial assets, to facilitate the ongoing investigation. Subsequently, five (5) of her bank accounts were cleared of suspicion of being involved in any wrongdoing.
Background:
In July 2023, Cecilia Dapaah, the former Sanitation Minister, garnered attention when the Chronicle Newspaper reported that her domestic staff were taken to court on allegations of stealing $1 million, 300,000 euros, millions of cedis, and personal belongings of the former minister and her husband, valued at thousands of Ghana Cedis and dollars. Following public outrage, Cecilia Dapaah resigned from her position and was subsequently arrested by the OSP, later being granted bail.
On July 24, 2023, officials from the Office of the Special Prosecutor conducted a search at the former Minister of Sanitation’s residence. During the search, they discovered US$590,000 and GHC2.730,000 in cash. These substantial sums were seized as crucial evidence to support the ongoing investigation. Additionally, the OSP froze seven of Cecilia Dapaah’s bank accounts.
