Official: Autopsy report confirms John Kumah died of natural causes, rules out poisoning

The autopsy report for the late Ejisu Member of Parliament, John Ampontuah Kumah, has verified that he succumbed to natural causes. The examination, carried out at the Police Hospital in Accra, dispelled any notions of foul play by confirming the absence of harmful substances in his body. According to the toxicology findings shared with GhanaWeb, tests for alcohol, drugs, and poisons in his blood and urine samples returned negative results.

Prior reports by GhanaWeb highlighted that the MP had been battling multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer, and was under medical care for it.

The autopsy details, sent to the Coroner at the Kaneshie District Magistrate Court on March 11, 2024, cited “congestive heart failure,” “severe anaemia,” and “underlying multiple myeloma” as the causes of his death.

The family received the autopsy report on March 12, 2024, and is currently reviewing it as they proceed with obtaining his death certificate.

Speculation around the Deputy Minister for Finance’s death on March 7, 2024, initially pointed towards poisoning. Nonetheless, individuals close to the deceased disclosed his diagnosis with multiple myeloma in early 2023 and subsequent treatment endeavors.

Following his passing, it was revealed that he had traveled back from Germany due to a worsening condition which eventually led to his demise.

Multiple myeloma, the disease he was contending with, targets plasma cells, leading to abnormal growth that interferes with the production of healthy blood cells, causing issues such as bone weakness, anaemia, kidney damage, and compromised immune response.

A source confirmed to GhanaWeb that the MP was receiving treatment at the University Hospital of Erlangen in Germany, where he even suffered a left arm fracture. Despite being scheduled for active treatment in Germany on March 12, 2024, he left against medical advice to partake in the Independence Day celebrations on March 6, 2024, planning to return afterwards. Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated, and he passed away while being transferred from Kumasi to Accra for a return flight to Germany for further medical care.
