Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the esteemed king and owner of Asante Kotoko, expressed his deep concern and disappointment with the club’s current state during a significant meeting held at the Manhyia Palace on Friday.
The meeting, attended by supporters and former players, aimed to address the club’s situation following the conclusion of the Dr. Kwame Kyei-led board’s three-year mandate.
During the gathering, various pressing issues were discussed, and crucial information was revealed, including the club’s substantial debt, which amounts to over GH¢3 million.
The Asantehene expressed his dissatisfaction with the club’s current trajectory, a sentiment that resonated with all present at the meeting.
“Asante Kotoko is the only institution disgracing me,” he candidly expressed.
Once renowned as one of the biggest clubs in Africa, Kotoko now faces challenges in domestic competitions, having remained trophyless last season.
Furthermore, the club has not won an African title in four decades, a stark contrast to their dominant performances in the CAF Champions League during the 1970s and 1980s.
The Asantehene’s concerns regarding Kotoko’s current status highlight the urgent need for a renewed approach and strategic planning to restore the club to its former glory.
The meeting at the Manhyia Palace served as a crucial moment to chart a new course for Kotoko, as supporters and stakeholders acknowledged the necessity for change and improvement.
