The draft Bill of new Public Elections (Registration of Voters) Regulations, 2023, which proposed to make the Ghana Card the only identification document for voter registration, has been unanimously rejected by Parliament.
During today’s sitting, the first deputy Speaker presented the report of the committee of the whole on behalf of the speaker. The report recommended that the House should communicate its decision to the Electoral Commission (EC) and ask for their favorable consideration before presenting the bill for passage into law.
The special budget in its report also recommended that Parliament hold a meeting with the EC and the National Identification Authority (NIA) to address concerns about the proposed CI.
After deliberations and responses from the Electoral Commission, the committee concluded that the draft Public Elections (Registration of Voters) Regulations, 2023 and related matters should be submitted to the House for consideration and adoption. The committee also urged the House to officially communicate its decision to the EC for their favorable consideration before presenting the bill for passage into law
