The police have confirmed that Albert Donkor, who died while in their custody in April 2022, was a member of an armed robbery gang. The investigation carried out by the Ghana Police Service revealed that Albert Donkor was one of the robbers involved in a shootout with the police in Nkoranza. The police presented their forensic report, which showed that the ITEL mobile phone recovered at the robbery scene belonged to Albert Donkor and contained his voter’s ID card and a picture of a Rugger pistol with a serial number that was taken by the deceased. The investigation also found that a grey hoodie found during the investigation belonged to Albert Donkor.
The police briefed the families of both deceased suspects on the outcome of the investigation, and the report stated that Albert Donkor died from a head injury, fall, and brain tumour, not from gunshots, as previously believed by the public. However, the Police Professional Standard Bureau noted in their report that the police could have apprehended the suspects alive if they had acted more professionally
Background
Albert Donkor, a resident of Nkoranza in the Bono Region, was involved in a violent confrontation with the police, which ultimately resulted in his death. Following the announcement of his demise, enraged members of the community attacked and gained access to the Nkoranza District Police Headquarters, releasing detainees in the process.
In a statement, the Police Service clarified that Albert Donkor sustained a fatal gunshot wound during a police operation, and not while in police custody, contrary to public claims. Consequently, the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) launched an inquiry to determine if the operation followed standard protocols.
Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, the Member of Parliament for Nkoranza South, urged the President to ensure justice for the deceased, who he alleged died at the hands of the police.
