President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo emphasized the need for a Member of Parliament without ongoing court cases during his address on June 25 at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) final rally in Fosu for the Assin North by-election. He urged supporters to vote for the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Charles Opoku, highlighting Opoku’s ability to focus on legislative duties without being burdened by other issues.
Akufo-Addo specifically referred to James Gyakye Quayson, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, who seeks to regain the seat from which he was ousted by the Supreme Court last month and currently faces criminal charges at an Accra High Court. The president drew a parallel between Quayson’s case and that of a former NPP MP for Bawku Central who was imprisoned for contesting a parliamentary seat despite holding dual Ghanaian and British citizenship.
Akufo-Addo reminded the audience that such incidents should not be forgotten, urging truthfulness and an end to spreading misinformation in rural communities. He questioned whether politics played a role in the imprisonment of Adamu Dramani Sakande during his presidency and criticized attempts to associate it with the current situation.
The by-election has witnessed significant political engagement in recent weeks, with campaigns concluding on June 25 in preparation for the upcoming vote. President Akufo-Addo led the NPP’s final rally in support of Charles Opoku, who, according to a poll, holds a slight lead in the race.
