Samuel Bryan Buabeng has called on Kennedy Agyapong, a Member of Parliament representing Assin Central, to make a new version of the controversial film he previously aired about investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas. Buabeng specifically suggested that Agyapong should reproduce the film under the title “Who Watches the Watchman: The Shameful End of an Investigative Terrorist” and have it available on the global streaming platform Netflix.
This statement by Buabeng came in the aftermath of a recent ruling by the High Court in Accra, which cited sections of the aforementioned documentary as it dismissed a defamation case brought against Agyapong by Anas.
Anas vs. Ken Agyapong defamation case
On March 15, 2023, the Accra High Court dismissed a GH¢25 million defamation suit brought by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas against Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a Member of Parliament. Justice Eric Baah, who presided over the case, ruled that while some of the defendant’s claims against the plaintiff were potentially defamatory, they were factual and fair. As a result, the court dismissed the suit and awarded the defendant 50,000 Ghana cedis to cover his legal fees.
Kennedy Ohene Agyapong referred to the ruling as a victory for “straight talk” over “investigative terrorism.” However, Anas Aremeyaw Anas expressed serious concerns about the ruling, calling it a “travesty of justice.” He also confirmed that his legal team plans to file an appeal, emphasizing that his fight against corruption will continue without interruption
