Tyrone Iras Marhguy, the Rastafarian student who faced initial denial of admission by Achimota School in 2021 due to his dreadlocks, has achieved remarkable success in the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Master Marhguy excelled with the highest grade, A1, in all eight subjects as a General Science student at the school. Despite the initial rejection, a court intervention in May 2021 mandated the school to admit him after extensive deliberations. This achievement follows a legal battle initiated by Tyrone and Oheneba Nkrabea, fellow Rastafarian student, against Achimota School’s denial based on their religious practice. The Accra High Court, on May 31, 2021, ruled in favor of the Rastafarian students, directing the school to admit them. Justice Gifty Adjei Addo disagreed with the Attorney General’s submissions, granting all reliefs sought by the students, except for compensation in Tyrone Marhguy’s case. Justice Addo emphasized the absurdity of suggesting that the two were not students and directed Achimota School to admit the Rastafarian students.
